题目：Every People’s Commune Builds a Middle School: The Effects of a Massive Rural Education Expansion Program in Pre-reform China

摘要：Prior to its Reform and Opening Policy, China achieved a level of secondary-school education unparalleled by its level of economic development. This study aims to understand the pre-reform formation of China’s human capital by looking at a massive rural school construction program in which the number of secondary schools increased tenfold from 19,367 in 1965 to 198,963 in 1977. Using a county-level dataset compiled from local gazetteers and population censuses, we show strong evidence that the program significantly improved the education attainment of rural children. Such a rapid expansion was associated with a deterioration in education quality, but the presence of sent-down educated youths during that period helped mitigate the negative trade-off in quantity and quality. Further analysis indicates that the rural school program contributed to the improvement in agricultural productivity.

题目：Reputation Vs Regulation: NGO Monitoring and Corporate Social Responsibility

摘要：The past few decades witnessed the rise of private regulation and monitoring of firms by non-profit activists. Conducting a nationwide randomized controlled trial (RCT) covering 562 listed companies in China, we investigate whether companies respond to NGO monitoring and promote CSR behavior. We find that companies improved their CSR behavior after being reminded that they are monitored by NGOs, especially those with poor performance. Compared to the potential influence of corporate reputation, the threat of being reported to the competent department for incompliance with relevant regulations increases responsiveness and has a more significant impact on companies’ CSR behavior. Our results suggest the participation of NGOs in the monitoring of CSR is productive in supplementing government supervision and promoting CSR performance.

主讲人简介：刘梦迪博士现为对外经济贸易大学国际经济贸易学院助理教授。2019年博士毕业于南京大学与亚利桑那大学联合培养项目。主要研究领域为环境经济、环境治理、政策评估，研究成果发表在American Journal of Political Science、Journal of Development Economics、Journal of Environmental Economics and Management、Journal of Regulatory Economics等高水平国际期刊上。主持国家自然科学基金青年项目（环境信息公开对我国环境治理的影响机制和效果研究）。参与美国国家自然科学基金、瑞典“环境与发展”（EfD）等多项国际科研项目。2020年获得获美国政治科学协会（APSA）Evan Ringquist最佳论文奖。
